ASUU Strike Update
The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have considered to to make move in order to suspend the ongoing strike by the university lecturers. This consideration was extracted from the meetings done by the head and part of the body of the organization (ASUU). ASUU Strike Update!
Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labor and Employment, on Thursday affirmed the success of the meeting which was called at the instance of the minister. ‘We will resume discussions by next week,’ Chris said.
The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to resume talks next week to resolve the ongoing strike by university teachers.
Though there was no conclusive order to suspend the strike, but the ASUU president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, confirmed that there would be another meeting with that regard next week. Those present at Thursday’s meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr Sonny Echonu, and Dr Isa Fagge, former ASUU President.
He said “we have just started the discussion, we have really not gone too far, so we have just opened the issues. By tomorrow we shall meet and decide when we reschedule the meeting.’ In other words, “THE STRIKE CONTINUES’.
Reason Behind ASUU Strike
The lecturers embarked o strike on Nov. 5 because of poor educational system. They demanded for improve in funds as regards public universities based on agreements reached with the Federal Government in 2009.
Other reasons include;
- Non-payment of Earned Allowances
- Funding of revitalization of the Universities in Nigeria
- Implementation of needs assessment report
- Poor funding of State Universities
- Poor academic infrastructure and few others.
