The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), stormed ECOWAS Secretariate located in Abuja to protest the alleged closure of shops belonging to Nigerians in Ghana. The protest began at 09:00 am and the protesters marched in full through the streets of Yakubu Gowon way in Asokoro and the protest caused a traffic jam along the Asokoro region.
Marching in groups, they were armed with placards which indicated their mission. The placards bear many write-ups; “We need ECOWAS intervention”, “Ghana re-open Nigeria’s shops now!”, “the situation in Ghana is totally unacceptable by us”, “Ghana wants AFCTA secretariat but clamps on African traders”, among other statements.
When asked the reason behind their protest, their President, Barrister Ken Ukaoha said.
‘ The association was protesting the alleged victimization of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana’. He added that the developement had gotten so bad that a law was recently passed by the Ghanaian parliament seeking to make the business environment hostile to foreign investors.
He continued ‘ since Ghana is a signatory to the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of goods and services, there is an urgent need for the commission to caution the government of Ghana’.
Meanwhile, ECOWAS vice president, Madam Finda Koroma was the person who recieved the petition on behalf of the Commission and she promised to speak with Ghanaian authorities in order to rectify the issue immediately.
Furthermore, she pleaded with National Association of Nigerian Traders over the closure of businesses of Nigerians in Ghana and notably, she poured out her condolences with NANTS over the death of one of her members who committed suicide in Ghana over the continous closure of her business which is her only source of living.
