Every discipline has some unique and special importance in any field of learning. The Importance of Statistics in Education is hereby attributed to ‘how important Statistics is to every field of learning’ whether scientifically, theoretically and otherwise. Most especially the importance and role of statistics in educational research.

Probably no other subjects other than statistics demonstrate so clearly that there are several kinds of intelligence. Hence, statistics, if clearly understood, is a fascinating subject which has tremendous importance in  computer, philosophy, medical sciences, psychology and education in general.

Statistics is used every now and then even outside the field of core Education such as Diagnosis and Programming. Statistics works hand-in-hand with Mathematics. Running away from Statistics is like running away from mathematics, you will be tired. This article will center mostly on the role and importance of Statistics in Education.

Though Statistical approaches sometimes appear to be  insignificant to be noticed, but it doesn’t deny the degree of its value in everyday life.

Student-learning is measured more than ever before, and that means that the education field needs professionals who have expertise in educational statistics and measurement.

Definition of Statistics

Statistics has been defined to be ‘the science concerned with developing and studying methods for collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting empirical data.’

Statistics is a highly interdisciplinary field; research in statistics finds applicability in virtually all scientific fields and research questions in the various scientific fields motivate the development of new statistical methods and theory.

In developing methods and studying the theory that underlies the methods statisticians draw on a variety of mathematical and computational tools.

Statistics deals with numerical facts which can be measured, enumerated and estimated.  The facts are homogeneous and related to each other. Facts must be accurate and it must be collected systematically.

Statistics in education helps in the collection and presentation of Data in a well-arranged manner; Simply put, Statistics in educations helps in the orderly arrangement of data whether processed or not.

Data are a set of facts, and provide a partial picture of reality. Whether data are being collected with a certain purpose or collected data are being utilized, questions regarding what information the data are conveying, how the data can be used, and what must be done to include more useful information must constantly be kept in mind.

Since most data are available to researchers in a raw format, they must be summarized, organized, and analyzed to usefully derive information from them. This entails that unorganized or un-analyzed data are prone to unreliable and false output or result.

Furthermore, each data set needs to be presented in a certain way depending on what it is used for. Planning how the data will be presented is essential before appropriately processing raw data.

Statistics in Education makes Teaching and Learning Process more efficient in practice. Statistics in Education with special considerations to measurement and evaluation are essential part of teaching and learning process.

In this process, scores are being obtained and interpreted in order to take decisions. Statistics therefore enables us to study these scores objectively. It makes the teaching learning process more efficient.

Every data in statistics is described with a property and values. The properties and values are assigned to a particular description that will enable a layman to grab immediately. 

Take for example, the Google Search Console is a great tool that uses Statistics to show a user the happenings around his or her website. The statistics could show the user, how many traffics he is getting in his website everyday. Again the Statistics will show the user his ranks for all the keywords in his website.

Sometimes due to lack of technical knowledge, the teacher become vague in describing pupil’s performance. But statistics aids him or her to describe the performance by using proper language, and symbols. With the help of these statistical approaches, a definite and exact interpretation emerge.

Again, statistics helps to guide one in thinking activities. When one thinks systematically through a calculated analysis and statistics, he or she thinks rightly and is likely to arrive at positive results quickly.

Think about Philosophy, the love of wisdom – the thinking bank. It maintains the use of statistics in thinking. Every good thinker utilizes every opportunity of Analysis.

The reason why a particular student performs poor in a particular subject are varied and many. So with the appropriate statistical methods, we can keep these extraneous variables constant and can observe the cause of failure of the pupil in a particular subject

Suppose a patient has malaria according to survey, when statistical analysis is introduced, it will go a long way to present the accurate level of malaria in his or her body. Again, the already recorded statistics from history could give a hint on other diseases that are likely to arose .

It could even predict the most intelligent student among the 89 students in the class. This is what Statistics can do.

On the other hand, prior to a general election in a country, the statistical analysis of the political campaigns and awareness could make one to predict correctly who will win the election. Here Statistics plays a very vital role.

The role of statistics in the collection of data and information is a very sensitive one. With a good statistical data, you can access varieties of information.

For example, when the University management secures the data of the whole lecturers in the University, they could easily get information on what field they know best and then assign them to handle courses in that field.

Also, when the University management gets the whole data of the entire students in the university, they can determine how the best courses to offer them.
